Cahuenga Corridor Beauty Bar
Not so long ago the Cahuenga Corridor, a side street off Hollywood Boulevard from roughly Yucca Street to Sunset Boulevard, was known for its drug trade, homeless squats, and crime. The twenty-first century brought a turn-around, and now it's known for trendy retail, record stores, and vibrant nightlife.

The Spotlight (1601 N. Cahuenga), a venerable gay bar since 1963, offers cheap drinks, rec room decor, shifty clientele, and usually a gaggle of friendly transfolk.

The Beauty Bar (1638 N. Cahuenga Blvd.) used to be a beauty salon -- and still is. Its hair dryers and other salon fixtures still work, and you can get a manicure or henna tattoo with your Stoli if you like.

Back toward the dive-bar end of the spectrum, the Burgundy Room (1621 N. Cahuenga Blvd.) is refreshingly seedy and generally crowded with a tattooed and pierced clientele rocking out to the hardcore punk on the jukebox, with DJs after 10 p.m.
