Once a year the dead are honored with elaborate costumes, masks, altars, and posters lovingly crafted by the living. This is no regular LA party, but a celebration of Dia de Los Muertos--the day of the dead. In 1972, Self-Help Graphics revived this centuries-old Mexican tradition of celebrating the dead on November 2, when two artists met at the Evergreen Cemetery to honor their loved ones and their cultural heritage.

More than 35 years later, Self-Help Graphics' annual pilgrimage to the Evergreen Cemetery is alive and thriving. Community residents, artists, and youth have joined this important celebration, which now incorporates current politics--such as honoring victims of the Iraq war--with ancient tradition.

Youth workshops have even been developed to properly educate young people on how to respectfully honor the dead, while ceremonial coffees and pan de muerto, altar blessings, processions, and performances make November 2 a night to remember.
