Celebrating Mexico's historic victory over invading French forces in 1862, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo has also come to represent a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage for many Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. Cinco de Mayo Festivals, with traditional music, dance performances, cultural exhibitions, food and festivities can be found throughout Los Angeles, often spilling over to the following day or weekend.

Some of the city's most popular Cinco de Mayo gatherings include the festival at the cultural center of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument on Olvera Street Downtown, celebrations and performances in Long Beach's city park and Aquarium of the Pacific, and the long-running Monterey Park Cinco de Mayo Festival at the Barnes Park Amphitheater.

Also, the Autry National Center in Los Feliz offers a wide range of all-ages Cinco de Mayo activities and a marketplace celebrating the work of Mexican-American artists and craftspeople.
