Falling sometime between the end of January and early February according to the lunar calendar, the Chinese New Year celebrations in LA's vibrant Chinatown are famous nationwide and have been drawing in thousands of celebrants and spectators for more than 100 years. One of the oldest parades in the country, the stunning Golden Dragon Parade mesmerizes audiences with hand-painted dragons, traditional dancing and costumes, live bands, and 100-plus floats.

Other Chinatown New Year's festivities include a wide assortment of street performances, cultural demonstrations, children's games, and food vendors. Admission to the parade and surrounding events is free; stadium seating for parade watching is also available for a fee.

Chinese New Year events elsewhere around Los Angeles include a slightly smaller dragon parade in Hollywood beginning at Grauman's Chinese Theatre; a Floral Street Fair and Lantern Festival in San Gabriel Valley's Monterey Park; and a Lantern Festival with music, dance, and acrobatic performances at the Chinese American Museum on Olvera Street in Downtown LA.
