This important festival, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States, features art, business, and social service exhibits, and daily community forums relating to important issues in the African-American community.
While this festival is predominantly known for its social justice undertones, it doesn't lack for lighter entertainment. Each year a carnival, children's village, fashion show, and performance art stage wow crowds while the festival's organized summer games build community spirit through friendly competition.
Embedded in this annual August festival is the organizers' long-term goal of acquiring land to develop a year-round African American cultural tourist destination that would provide educational, commercial, and recreational activities to tourists and local residents alike.
