But the city is also replete with plenty of other ways to take advantage of Tinsel Town. For one, you could see an actual movie in one of LA's historic movie houses, such as the world-famous Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood; another great choice is the Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, well-known among industry professionals for showing the best of new, independent, and alternative films. The Magic Johnson Theaters, owned by the basketball legend himself, show both mainstream and alternative African American films.
A wide variety of film festivals are held around the city throughout the year. Check out the AFI Los Angeles Film Festival in November for films from 40-plus countries. Outfest, a 10-day event in July, features gay and lesbian movies at a number of different venues. Last Remaining Seats is put on in June by the LA Conservancy and screens classic movies in Downtown LA's historic movie houses.
If you're up for more adventurous movie-going experiences, try scoring yourself tickets to a preview screening, which the industry uses to gauge audience reaction to unreleased films. Tickets are often handed out around the Hollywood Walk of Fame or Universal CityWalk at Universal Studios.
Or, if you have a lot of time in the area, try to get yourself into a movie as an extra! Extras, who are "people-filler" in movies, are always needed at movie shoots. Calls for extras can be found in the local papers.
