Redondo Beach is part of The Beaches area, sandwiched between Torrance and the Pacific Ocean, that continues south to Palos Verdes and north through Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach to Marina Del Rey. Redondo Beach is known for its surfing, its world-class beach volleyball, and The Strand, a paved path that stretches from South Redondo to Santa Monica and is enjoyed by everything on human-powered wheels, including strollers, skateboards, and rollerblades. West of the Pacific Coast Highway in the town of Redondo Beach proper are the indoor pleasures, which include hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs galore.
Long Beach is the fifth largest California city, the third busiest U.S. seaport, home to about half a million people, and noted among other things for its street art, some commissioned and some of it home-grown. Well worth a visit in the Long Beach area is Rancho Los Alamitos, a historical site that includes a working blacksmith shop and an adobe ranch house dating from 1800.
