Downtown can't seduce the tourist whose heart is set on the Malibu surf or on Rodeo Drive bling, but there is plenty to do and see. Try the world-class Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and its Geffen Contemporary collection, for instance, or the 11-story, right-angle-free Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic District is a tribute to an earlier and much different Los Angeles. Go to the small Chinatown for dim sum done right, or Little Tokyo for shops, restaurants, and deep immersion in LA's real Japanese culture.
